1909 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Reverse VDDR-048

Description

The 1909-P Lincoln Wheat Cent VDDR-048 exhibits a light spread on the TE of UNITED, the F of OF, the TA of STATES, and the M of AMERICA. The 1909 cent holds the distinction of being the inaugural year of Victor David Brenner's Lincoln Cent — the first circulating U.S. coin to bear a presidential portrait — struck in 95% copper, 5% tin and zinc bronze. Two reverse die varieties are in play: RDV-004 (deep cut N, no V.D.B.) and RDV-003 (shallow cut N, no V.D.B.). Four die stages are documented. Stage A is early die state, unconfirmed. Stage B is mid-die state, confirmed, with a die crack from the lower right wheat grains to the rim and the obverse in mid-die state. Stage C is late to mid-die state, confirmed, with a crack reaching the lower E of STATES, a crack through the lower left wheat grains to the rim, a light crack from the head to the rim through E of WE, and a light crack from the bust to the rim. Stage D is late die state, unconfirmed. The UVC and DMR designations are pending full assignment in the VarietyVista reference.
