1909 VDDR VDDR-044

Description

Within the shared-hub doubled die reverse family for the first-year Lincoln Wheat cent, the 1909 VDDR-044 is cataloged by VarietyVista. Like its siblings, this die carries light spread across the reverse legend consistent with the common misaligned hub impression, and corresponds to reverse die varieties RDV-004 or RDV-003 (without V.D.B. initials). The distinguishing marker for VDDR-044 is a die crack running through the upper right wheat grains to the rim, documented at Mid-Die State. This crack's appearance at MDS rather than earlier indicates the die saw moderate use before the fracture developed, meaning Early Die State examples of this particular working die would lack the crack entirely. Collectors tracking die states prize the progression from uncracked to cracked specimens, as it maps the die's working life. The crack through the upper right wheat grains to the rim should not be confused with the similar crack on VDDR-046, which appears on a separate working die and is present already at Early Die State.
