1909 VDDR VDDR-037

Description

As a doubled die reverse from the inaugural year of the Lincoln cent series, the 1909 VDDR-037 carries historical weight beyond its die variety status. The reverse displays light hub doubling spread visible on TE of UNITED, the F of OF, TA of STATES, and the M of AMERICA, a pattern shared with several other 1909 working dies that received impressions from the same doubled hub. What distinguishes VDDR-037 from its siblings is its unique die progression: Stage B specimens exhibit a die crack running through the middle of the right wheat stalk out to the rim, placing the die at early-to-mid die state. The obverse is confirmed at mid-die state. This variety uses Reverse Die Variety RDV-004 (characterized by a deep-cut N) or RDV-003 (shallow-cut N), both lacking V.D.B. initials. The 1909 Lincoln cent replaced the long-running Indian Head design, making doubled dies from this transitional year especially prized by error-variety specialists.
