1909 VDDR VDDR-033
Error
Description
From the inaugural year of the Lincoln Cent, this doubled die reverse cataloged as VDDR-033 by VarietyVista — with pending designations UVC-???? and DMR-0?? — documents a hub-doubling event on Victor David Brenner's historic design. Four die stages have been identified. Stage A preserves the early die state. Stage B introduces a die clash above the left stem in early-to-mid die state. Stage C reaches mid-die state with a die crack down the lapel to the rim. Stage D in late die state remains unconfirmed. The reverse is identified as either RDV-004 with a deep-cut N or RDV-003 with a shallow-cut N — both varieties produced without V.D.B., the designer's initials removed after public objection to their prominent display during 1909's initial run. The four-stage progression offers collectors a chronological narrative of this die's working life, from pristine early impressions through clash marks and structural cracking. That thirty-three doubled die reverses have been cataloged for 1909 alone reflects extraordinary research attention devoted to the Lincoln Cent's debut year, where every die variation carries amplified historical significance.
