Struck during the inaugural year of the Lincoln Wheat Cent — Victor David Brenner's portrait design that debuted in August 1909 — VDDR-016 documents a doubled die reverse with light spread on TE of UNITED, F of OF, TA of STATES, and M of AMERICA. The reverse die is classified as RDV-002, distinguished from RDV-001 by a deeper cut on the N and the presence of V.D.B. — Brenner's initials that appeared on the earliest 1909 cents before public outcry led to their removal partway through production.
