Description

Documented by VarietyVista on the first-year Lincoln cent, VDDR-015 shows light doubling on the TE of UNITED, the F of OF, the TA of STATES, and the M of AMERICA. Two reverse die variety designations apply to this coin: the reverse may be identified as either RDV-002, with a deep-cut N and V.D.B. initials, or RDV-001, with a shallow-cut N and V.D.B. Attribution codes UVC-???? and DMR-0?? are placeholder codes indicating values not yet formally assigned. In Stage A, a strong die scratch runs from the upper S of PLURIBUS to the dot; both obverse and reverse are early die state. Stage B adds die cracks: one from the last S of STATES to the rim at mid-die state, and one across the bust to the rim, also mid-die state. Stage C, at late-to-mid die state, shows a die crack from the left wheat lines to the rim and a crack across the bust; the Stage C obverse is shared with VDDR-030 in its late-to-mid die state. Stage D is late die state, unconfirmed. The 1909 Lincoln cent, designed by Victor David Brenner in 95% bronze, is the inaugural year of the long-running series, lending particular historical interest to all varieties from this date.
