Description
The 1908 (S) Indian Head Eagle is a Gold Eagle from the San Francisco Mint, belonging to the Indian Head Eagles 1907-1933 series. With a mintage of 59,850, this is a scarce issue — ranked 2nd of 5 mint variants by mintage, with 4% of production. The obverse features a Native American wearing a feathered war bonnet, facing left and the reverse displays a standing eagle with the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST. Both "No Motto" and "With Motto" varieties exist after Congress mandated restoration of IN GOD WE TRUST mid-year. Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco struck coins. The San Francisco Mint, a Gold Rush-era institution, now specializes in proof and collector coinage. Estimated market value ranges from $2.8K to $17K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 16.7 grams, 26.8 mm in diameter, with a raised stars edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8861.
