Description
The 1908 Proof Indian Head Eagle - Satin is a proof Gold Eagle struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Indian Head Eagles 1907-1933 series. All 116 proof eagles of 1908 are counted together, whatever their finish; how many have the Satin finish is unknown. The obverse features Liberty wearing a feathered Indian war bonnet, facing left, and the reverse displays a standing eagle with the mottoes E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST. Both "No Motto" and "With Motto" varieties exist after Congress mandated restoration of IN GOD WE TRUST mid-year. Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco struck coins. As a proof, it was struck from specially prepared dies and planchets; proofs of this series have matte or satin finishes rather than mirror fields. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 16.72 grams, 27 mm in diameter, with a raised stars edge. Cataloged as PCGS #88890.
