Description
The 1907 Proof St. Gaudens Double Eagle - Small Edge Letters is a proof Gold Double Eagle struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the St. Gaudens Double Eagles 1907-1933 series. With a mintage of 3, this is an extremely rare issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 0% of production. The obverse features Liberty striding forward holding a torch and olive branch, with rays of sunlight behind her — widely considered the most beautiful U.S. coin design and the reverse displays a flying eagle with the rising sun behind it. First year includes extremely rare Ultra High Relief (originally "Extremely High Relief") versions requiring multiple strikes, plus Wire Rim and Rolled Rim varieties. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value is approximately $3995K.
