Description
This 1903 Indian Head Cent displays a die clash on the reverse where the nose and forehead of Liberty are visible as clashed impressions below and through the letter C of CENT — the characteristic die clash pattern for the Indian Head Cent series, where the geometric relationship between the obverse portrait and reverse inscription creates a consistent transfer zone. When the obverse and reverse dies struck each other without a planchet between them, the raised portions of Liberty's facial features pressed into the reverse die face at the location directly opposite them, and the C of CENT on the reverse sits precisely in the zone where Liberty's nose and forehead reside on the opposing obverse die. This consistent geometric alignment means virtually all Indian Head Cent die clashes produce the same C/Portrait pattern, though the strength and detail of the transferred impression varies with the force and angle of each individual clash event. The reverse-focused clash with facial features under the C is the most commonly encountered and widely collected clash pattern on Indian Head Cents, providing an entry point for collectors exploring die clash varieties within this series. The 1903 Indian Head Cent was designed by James Barton Longacre and struck at the Philadelphia Mint in bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) weighing 3.11 grams with a diameter of 19.05 mm. The 1903 had a mintage of approximately 85.1 million pieces, making it one of the higher-mintage dates in the series and increasing the probability that multiple die pairs experienced clash events during the production run. Longacre's Liberty portrait, featuring the distinctive feathered headdress, and the oak wreath reverse with its prominent CENT inscription have been in production since the early 1860s, and the C/Liberty clash pattern appears consistently across the full date range from 1860 through 1909.
