1901-P VAM-2

Description

Leroy Van Allen, co-creator of the VAM classification system that revolutionized Morgan and Peace Dollar variety collecting, personally discovered VAM-2 of the 1901 Morgan Dollar in December 1965. Despite its designation as a normal die pairing, the variety holds historical significance as one of Van Allen's own attributions during the formative years of systematic Morgan Dollar research. The obverse presents a normal III2 type die with a closed 9, while the reverse carries a normal C4 type die. The 1901-P is recognized as a key date in the series, with values in higher grades climbing steeply due to limited survival in uncirculated condition despite reasonable original mintage. Philadelphia produced Morgan Dollars throughout the series, and even normal die pairings receive individual catalog entries to ensure complete documentation of every known die combination. Cataloged as plate 2 III2 1 - C4a (189), this variety serves as a reference standard for the date.
