1901-O VAM-6

Description

Discovered by Leonard Hinckley in February 1974, the 1901-O VAM-6 carries the classification 6 III2 1 • C4d and is described under the working title High O. The defining reverse characteristic is a medium O mintmark set high and shifted to the right of its normal position on the C4d reverse die. The VAM-6 designation carries a question mark reflecting ongoing attribution uncertainty, a concern that has been substantiated by comparative study: the mintmark position illustrated in the VAM World reference book for VAM-6 matches the specification of the separately cataloged 1901-O VAM-30, which is described as set right and not quite high. Because the VAM-30 specification more accurately describes the observable mintmark placement, examples that would have been attributed to VAM-6 based on the book plate are now more properly attributed to VAM-30. Collectors and dealers should exercise caution when attributing high O examples from this date and mintmark combination and should compare carefully against the VAM-30 diagnostics before assigning the VAM-6 designation.
