Description

Algot Stephenson identified this 1897-P Morgan dollar variety in 2015, revealing a reverse die crack that runs along the tops of the letters MERI in AMERICA, continuing upward to the rim above the letter C where it develops into a slight displaced field break above ERIC. Cataloged as VAM-1C with the designation III2 1 - C3a (Die Break ERIC) (189), this variety documents progressive die deterioration in a specific zone of the reverse legend. The "Die Break ERIC" descriptor pinpoints the location where the crack became severe enough to produce measurable metal displacement, creating a slightly raised ridge on struck coins that distinguishes this stage from a simple die crack. A couple of heavy polishing lines visible in the gap between the eagle's wing and body serve as the primary die marker, suggesting the die underwent at least one polishing event during its service life -- possibly an attempt to extend its usable lifespan by reducing the visual impact of the developing crack. Notably, this variety is recorded as being the same die as 1897-P VAM-16, indicating that the two VAM numbers may represent different die stages of the same die pair rather than entirely different dies, a situation that occasionally arises in the VAM system when significant die progression creates appearances distinct enough to warrant initial separate cataloging.
