1897-P VAM-10

Description

Discovered by Michael Ash in December 2006, the 1897-P VAM-10 — classified III2 9 / C3a, titled "Slightly Doubled 1" — carries one of the more recognizable reverse attributions for the date: the reverse displays what specialists call a "Bearded Eagle," a named feature caused by die characteristics that create the impression of feathering extending from the eagle's beak area. This named reverse elevates VAM-10 among 1897-P varieties. DPIS: LH3/RE4. The obverse doubling is subtle — a slight displacement at the lower edge of the top crossbar of the 1 — and on shallow-date or late-die-state specimens it can be nearly invisible. The key obverse die marker holds across die states: two horizontal polishing lines run across Liberty's neck, providing an anchor even when date doubling has faded. Attribution notes advise that the neck lines are the reliable diagnostic when date evidence is marginal. Morgan dollars are struck in 90% silver and designed by George T. Morgan; the 1897-P was produced in sufficient quantity to make die varieties accessible at moderate prices, while the Bearded Eagle reverse carries a named-feature premium among collectors.
