Error
Description
Discovered by Jeff Oxman in February 1985, this Philadelphia Morgan dollar is cataloged as VAM-7 under classification III2 6 with a C3a reverse, titled Doubled Stars, Tripled UNUM, carrying a rarity rating of 190. The obverse shows stars doubled toward the rim and tops of UNUM tripled toward the rim, indicating a rotational component to the hub misalignment. The emission sequence links this obverse die with VAM-3, with VAM-7 appearing to represent the earlier die state. The reverse die was also used for the 1892-P VAM-10. An interesting inconsistency exists in the clash evidence: while the reverse shows clear clashing on some examples, the obverse may show no clash evidence at all, though other specimens reveal marks on both sides. This variable presentation likely reflects different stages in the die's service life, with clash marks periodically polished from the obverse. The tripled UNUM offers the strongest visual diagnostic, as the three overlapping impressions near the rim produce a readily identifiable widening of the letter strokes.
