Description

An S-shaped thread-like die impression in the Phrygian cap fold provides the signature diagnostic for VAM-1B on the 1892 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar, discovered in 2010 and cataloged as III2 1 - C3a with Thread-Like Impressions Cap Fold at an unrated rarity level. The date appears very slightly slanted in normal lateral position with the 2 higher than the 1, a characteristic that contributes to attribution alongside the primary cap fold impression. VAMWorld documented this variety, which represents a die anomaly of uncertain origin — the thread-like impression in Liberty's Phrygian cap fold may have resulted from foreign material becoming embedded in the die during manufacture, a die finishing mark, or contact with textile fibers during storage or handling. Philadelphia produced 1,036,000 Morgan Dollars in 1892, one of the lower Philadelphia mintages in the series and a figure that reflected reduced silver dollar production in the final years before the Sherman Silver Purchase Act's repeal in 1893 dramatically curtailed new Morgan Dollar coinage. George T. Morgan's Liberty portrait, with its detailed Phrygian cap and flowing hair, provides numerous surface features where die anomalies can manifest, and the cap fold area specifically involves recessed die channels where foreign material could become lodged during the hubbing or finishing process. The S-shaped morphology of the impression distinguishes it from linear die scratches or circular die gouges, suggesting the source material had a curved or sinuous form. Low-mintage Philadelphia Morgan Dollars from the early 1890s carry inherent collector interest, and VAM varieties on these scarcer dates benefit from the concentrated attention they receive.
