Description

Discovered by John Baumgart in April 2001, this Philadelphia Morgan Dollar is designated 27 III21 C4/C3e (2 Olive Reverse, Thread on Wing). The reverse shows an extra olive to the right connected to the branch, doubling at the base of all three olive leaf clusters, top of middle and lower arrow feathers, back of lower arrowhead, right side of eagle's nostril and eye, and feathers of the eagle's left wing near neck. Short thread-like raised lines appear on the second feather from bottom of eagle's left wing and on eagle's right tail feathers — fine die impressions serving as secondary diagnostics. DPIS is LE3/B45C. Attributed by VAMWorld, the 1900 Philadelphia Morgan was struck as the denomination neared the end of its original production run before the 1921 resumption. This variety rewards close reverse examination, as the combination of extra olive, multiple areas of doubling, and distinctive thread-like die impressions creates a complex and visually rewarding attribution. Later die states show die clash marks.
