Description

Discovered by Brian Raines in October 2009 and revised in 2015, this 1890 Philadelphia Mint Morgan Dollar VAM-29 is cataloged as III2 1, C3e (Doubled Left Reverse), die pair 189. The reverse exhibits slight doubling on UNITED STATES OF along with some middle leaves in the left wreath and the tops of nearby design elements. The 2015 revision updated the original 2009 attribution, reflecting refined analysis of the doubling characteristics and die pair relationships. The doubled left reverse designation narrows the doubling location to the left portion of the reverse — the UNITED STATES OF legend and left wreath area — leaving the right side and lower legend unaffected. This asymmetric pattern is consistent with hub displacement that shifted primarily in one direction during the secondary hubbing impression. George T. Morgan's reverse design includes fine wreath detail and closely spaced legend lettering that registers even slight doubling with clarity. Philadelphia Mint Morgan Dollars from 1890 were struck in substantial quantities, and continued discoveries into the twenty-first century reflect sustained collector interest.
