1890-P VAM-13A

Description

The collector known as vamsterdam discovered this Philadelphia Morgan dollar in October 2018. Classified 13 III2 13 with a C3a reverse, the designation is Far Date, Denticle and Edge Impressions Right Tail Feathers. The obverse III2 13 die is identified by closely spaced polishing lines on the right inside of the ear. The reverse C3a die carries the variety's most intriguing feature: a raised dot between the first and second tail feather ends, plus two faint raised dots to the right spaced 0.030 inches apart, with a slightly curved line 0.025 inches below the dots likely formed by the die edge. Die polishing lines in the olive leaf cluster serve as the reverse die marker. The denticle and edge impressions resulted from physical contact between the die face and manufacturing components, with the consistent 0.030-inch spacing matching the denticle row interval. These contact marks provide evidence of how dies were handled during the production process at the Philadelphia Mint. The far date obverse positioning separates VAM-13A from varieties with normal or near lateral date placement in the 1890 Philadelphia series. TF Discovered by vamsterdam, October.
