Description

Discovered by Martin Field in July 1979, this 1890 Philadelphia Mint Morgan Dollar carries the VAM-10 designation for its doubled 90 and far date characteristics. Classified as III2 10 - C3a with a rarity of 190, the variety features the date positioned further right than normal on the obverse, immediately distinguishing it from standard die pairings. The numeral 9 appears in a closed form with doubling visible at the top outside of the upper loop, while the 0 shows faint doubling as a subtle arc at the top left outside of the digit. These doubled date features place VAM-10 among the more diagnostically interesting Philadelphia Mint varieties for the 1890 date, where the far date position provides an initial visual cue that prompts closer examination under magnification. Morgan Dollar collectors working through the VAM catalog for 1890 will find the combination of a displaced date position and confirmed hub doubling on two numerals makes this variety identifiable even at moderate magnification before consulting detailed die markers.
