Description

Classified III2 14 C3a, the 1890-P Morgan Dollar VAM-14 carries the attribution Doubled Profile and Ear, Slanted Date, Raised Bump Nose Front — a combination of obverse doubling, date geometry, and a distinctive die anomaly. Liberty's profile is slightly doubled on the nose, lips, and chin; the ear shows slight doubling at the right inside and at the bottom outside edge. The date is slanted, with the 1 positioned closest to the rim. A raised metal bump appears in the field directly in front of Liberty's nose, produced by a flaw in the die surface that filled with metal during striking. The reverse is C3a. Originally discovered and subsequently revised in 2010, the variety was further revised in 2014 by hobocarver attribution work. The 1890-P Morgan Dollar was struck in 90% silver at the Philadelphia Mint. The combination of profile doubling on nose, lips, and chin; slanted date with 1 nearest the rim; and the nose-area field bump creates a multi-attribute profile that distinguishes VAM-14 clearly across the 1890-P VAM population. = 1890-P Doubled Profile, Slanted Date, Nose Bump= Discovered by Martin Field.
