1890-P VAM-12

Description

Martin Field discovered VAM-12 in April 1981, with revisions by Ted Sudderth in 2014, cataloged as class III2 12 · C3a — Doubled 18. On the obverse (III2 12), the 1 shows doubling below the upper crossbar as a short spike, and the 8 carries doubling at the top inside of the upper loop. The date has a slight upward slant, with the 0 positioned slightly higher than the 1 — a date orientation detail visible at lower magnification. Liberty's ear is slightly doubled at the left and right inside and at the bottom outside, though the ear doubling is not consistently present even on high-grade examples, making it a supplementary rather than primary identifier. A confirming reverse marker is a tiny die chip at the top of the G in GOD — a small but persistent marker that appears across die states. The 1890-P Morgan Dollar is a 90% silver Philadelphia Mint issue. Collectors attributing VAM-12 should prioritize the date slant and the 18 doubling as primary identifiers, using the ear doubling and G die chip as supporting evidence rather than sole confirmation, given the inconsistent ear doubling across the population. =1890-P VAM-12 Doubled 18= Discovered by Martin Field, April 1981.
