Error
Description
Leonard Hinckley identified VAM-8 of the 1889-P Morgan dollar in February 1974, making it one of the earlier Philadelphia Mint varieties cataloged for this date. Designated III2 8 C3a as Very Far Date, High 9, the obverse features a date positioned much further right than normal, with an open and high 9. Both 8s carry die chips at the top inside of the lower loop, and the 9 has die chips at the bottom inside of the upper loop and at the top right inside of the upper loop. These die chips serve as strong attribution markers and distinguish VAM-8 from other far-date varieties of the issue. DPIS values are recorded as LH4/RH5, placing the date position within established measurement parameters for the far-right shift. The reverse is a standard C3a die. The 1889 Philadelphia Morgan dollar saw a large mintage, and positional date varieties like VAM-8 remain collectible for their distinct visual character. =1889-P VAM-8 Very Far Date, High 9= Discovered by Leonard Hinckley, February 1974.
