1888 Liberty Head Double Eagle - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

1888 WDDR-001 is a doubled die reverse on the 1888 Liberty Head double eagle, cataloged by the Wexler team. Extremely strong Class II doubling, spread toward the center, covers the whole reverse. It is widest near the rim and lessens toward the die's center. The horizontal crossbars of TWENTY DOLLARS and of E PLURIBUS UNUM are fully separated, while USA is very strongly spread without full separation. IN GOD WE TRUST and every star are doubled. The eagle is doubled most at the bottom and least on the head, which sits close to the die's center. The arrowheads, shafts and feathers are doubled too. On the obverse, one scratch starts at the middle of LIBERTY's L, crosses the I and ends at the B's top, and another runs from the center right of the B to the upper left of the E. On the reverse, a scratch sits at the top of the ribbon carrying UNUM, a vertical scratch lies right of UNUM's N, and a small strong gouge runs NW from the upper left of UNUM's second U. Bob Ryan submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
