Description

This 1887 Indian Head Cent exhibits a die clash variety primarily visible on the obverse, where design elements from the reverse die were transferred to the obverse die during an unintended contact event between the two dies without a planchet between them. The transferred elements consist of the letter C from the reverse denomination CENT and part of the reverse wreath design, both clashed into the area in front of Liberty's eye on the obverse. Die clashes occur during normal press operation when the automatic feed mechanism fails to deliver a planchet between the dies, causing the dies to strike each other directly. The force of this contact imparts mirror-image impressions of each die's design onto the opposing die face, which then appear as incuse ghost images on subsequently struck coins.
