Description
This 1887 Indian Head Cent exhibits a die clash variety primarily visible on the obverse, where design elements from the reverse die were transferred to the obverse die during an unintended contact event between the two dies without a planchet between them. The transferred elements consist of the letter C from the reverse denomination CENT and part of the reverse wreath design, both clashed into the area in front of Liberty's eye on the obverse. Die clashes occur during normal press operation when the automatic feed mechanism fails to deliver a planchet between the dies, causing the dies to strike each other directly. The force of this contact imparts mirror-image impressions of each die's design onto the opposing die face, which then appear as incuse ghost images on subsequently struck coins. This particular clash pattern is characterized as more subtle than the full-portrait transfers seen on other 1887 Indian Head Cent die clashes, with the transferred elements limited to the C and wreath details rather than showing a comprehensive cross-die transfer. The Indian Head Cent was designed by James B. Longacre, featuring Liberty wearing a Native American feathered headdress on the obverse, with a wreath encircling ONE CENT on the reverse. Struck in 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1887 issue weighs 3.11 grams at 19.05 mm diameter. The positioning of the clashed C and wreath in front of Liberty's eye corresponds to the geometric die alignment — when the reverse die's CENT inscription maps onto the obverse die face during a clash, the C falls in the region occupied by the area forward of Liberty's profile. The subtlety of this clash makes careful examination under magnification essential for detection.
