1887 Indian Head Cent Die Clash (Obverse and Reverse — Extensive)

Description

This 1887 Indian Head cent displays an extensive die clash on both sides, with transfer marks spread across multiple design zones on each die. On the obverse, clash marks appear in front of Liberty's eye, counterclockwise of OF in the legend, and between the feathers of the headdress — three distinct transferred areas. On the reverse, nearly the full front portrait and headdress feather detail have been transferred onto the die surface, leaving raised impressions of the obverse design across multiple areas of the reverse field. The widespread distribution of marks across non-adjacent zones on both dies indicates a particularly forceful clash event, where the dies contacted with unusual energy. Extensive two-sided clashes of this character are uncommon in the series and considerably more sought than minor single-zone clashes. Die clashes are a natural consequence of the Indian Head cent's high-relief design on both sides, combined with the automated presses of the late nineteenth century that could periodically cycle without a planchet in place.
