Description

This 1883 Indian Head Cent displays a pre-cud on the reverse running from the 1 o'clock to 3 o'clock position, accompanied by a secondary die crack on the top left of the shield. A pre-cud represents an advanced stage of die deterioration where die cracks have run from the rim and back to it, enclosing a die piece that has not separated — a die state that may, though not necessarily, go on to a retained cud or to the featureless raised blob characteristic of a complete cud.
