Description
The 1882 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-1683 is a proof five-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Design Reform Patterns (1880-1942) series. It is one of the designs that led to the 1883 Liberty nickel, and its reverse adds E PLURIBUS UNUM over the wreath. It is one of the pieces called Blind Man's nickels, with five raised ridges on the edge; Haseltine's March 1883 sale said only three were struck, but USPatterns.com traces at least five. It is struck in nickel with five raised bars on the edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1883 and Taxay EP1222. Cataloged as PCGS #62088.
