Description

Ninth nickel pattern variety from 1882, approaching the midpoint of the extensive Liberty Head design series. This variety may represent one of the patterns that tested the placement of IN GOD WE TRUST on the coin — a design element that appeared on some 1882 patterns but was not included on the adopted 1883 Liberty Nickel until the "With Cents" revision later that year. The question of which mottoes and legends to include, and where to place them, was one of the most debated aspects of the new nickel's design. Federal law mandated certain inscriptions but provided latitude in their arrangement. Barber explored multiple configurations to find the optimal balance between legal requirements, aesthetic harmony, and practical striking considerations. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge, this pattern captures one of those experimental configurations in tangible form.

Rarity Notes
