Description
Third variety in the 1882 Liberty Head Nickel pattern series, representing a further iteration in the design competition that would ultimately produce America's replacement for the Shield Nickel. This pattern tests another combination of obverse portrait treatment and reverse denomination display, with possible modifications to the size or style of the Roman numeral V, the wreath elements, or the legend lettering. The Liberty Head concept was proving versatile enough to support numerous variations, and Barber exploited this flexibility to present Mint officials with a range of options. Struck in nickel alloy, this piece demonstrates the design as it would appear on the intended production planchet. The 1882 nickel pattern series is remarkable not only for its size — over twenty distinct varieties — but for the quality of its execution, with each pattern struck in proof format to the highest standards of the Philadelphia Mint's capabilities.
