Description

Sixth variety in the 1882 nickel pattern series, representing the midpoint of the first half of this extensive design exploration. This pattern may incorporate the addition of E PLURIBUS UNUM to the reverse — a modification that Barber introduced during 1882 as part of his design revisions. The national motto had not appeared on the 1881 patterns, and its addition to the reverse created new compositional challenges in arranging text, the V denomination, and the wreath in a balanced layout. Struck in copper-nickel, this variety allows evaluation of how the added motto text affects the overall visual harmony of the reverse design. The progressive addition of design elements through the Judd sequence effectively documents Barber's design process in real time, with each pattern capturing a specific moment of creative decision-making at the Philadelphia Mint.
