Classified III2 4 - C3a, this 1882-CC Morgan Dollar VAM-4 is identified by its closed 2 in the date. Discovered by Leonard Hinckley in February 1974, the obverse die (III2 4) shows normal dies with a distinctly closed loop on the 2 — where the tail of the numeral curves inward to meet or nearly meet the upper stroke, distinguishing it from open-2 varieties. The reverse carries the C3a designation with a large open V-shaped CC mint mark from the Carson City Mint. Note: existence of this variety is dubious at best and is probably a cataloging error. Carson City Morgan Dollars are among the most sought-after in the series due to lower mintages and the romanticism of the frontier mint facility, but collectors should approach VAM-4 with particular caution given the uncertain status of this catalog entry.
