1882-CC VAM-1
ErrorDescription
Discovered by George Mallis in June 1965 — the co-creator of the Van Allen-Mallis classification system alongside Leroy Van Allen — VAM-1 is the baseline die marriage for the 1882-CC Morgan Dollar. Classified as III2 1 - C3a with an Open 2 at the top of the date, this variety features normal dies paired with a reverse bearing a large, open V-shaped CC mint mark. The 1882-CC Morgan Dollar was struck at the Carson City Mint in Nevada, one of the most storied U.S. Mint facilities and a source of enduring collector fascination. Carson City Morgan Dollars carry the CC mint mark that has become iconic in American numismatics, associated with the silver mining boom of the Comstock Lode. As VAM-1, this die marriage represents the starting point for the date's variety census — the most common or first-cataloged pairing from which other varieties are distinguished by their deviations in date position, mint mark characteristics, or die anomalies.
