Description
1881-O VAM-1E Pitted Ear Discovered by John Baumgart, September 2006. ELIMINATED 2017 - same as VAM-53 '''1E III2 1 · C3a (Pitted Ear) (176)''' '''Obverse''' '''III2 1–''' Dense fine raised dots on upper part of ear with very fine raised dots on rest of Liberty head from rusted die. '''Reverse C3a''' - Normal die '''Comments:''' '''1-''' a great marker for some specimens is the dot on the B of PLURIBUS '''2''' - Later die stages show a diagonal die crack through the O mint mark. '''3''' - This appears to be actually VAM 53. Doubling on date digits is not always visible due to striking. LVA Plate Photos Additional Photos The pitting at the top of the ear is fantastic - like a bad case of chicken pox! Some have thin crack across lower reverse from left wreath, crossing under end of branch and bottom of mint mark, then thru top of O and middle of first L in DOLLAR. LDS Specimens Date Placement The 1E also has a cool DOT above the date to the right like the pic below.
