1879 Proof Four Dollar Pattern - J-1641, Stella Coiled Hair
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
A further composition variant of Morgan's Coiled Hair Stella, expanding the known range of metals in which this celebrated design was struck. The existence of multiple off-metal variants indicates the Mint was seriously considering the four-dollar denomination for production, though ultimately the Stella program was abandoned after the 1880 strikings.
Rarity Notes
R-8+ (Unique or nearly so). Among the rarest of all U.S. pattern coins in any denomination.
