Description

The 1879 Proof Four Dollar Pattern - J-1640 is a proof four-dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. This is George T. Morgan's Coiled Hair Stella; the gold strikes (J-1638, 14 confirmed by USPatterns.com) have their own page in the Stella Four Dollars series. Five are confirmed in aluminum; an aluminum piece weighs about 19 to 20 grains against 55 to 60 for copper, and a gilt piece once sold as aluminum is gilt copper. NGC's census also lists gilt examples under this Judd number. It is struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1840, Adams-Woodin 1580 and Taxay EP1186. Cataloged as PCGS #537346.
