Description
The 1878 Proof Half Eagle Pattern - J-1578 is a proof half eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. This is George T. Morgan's Liberty head at regular size, made as both a half eagle and an eagle, the eagle copying his 1877 design (J-1545) with a new date. A Mint record of January 12, 1878 found by Roger Burdette records that two half eagles and two eagles of Morgan's design were struck in gold for the Director's office. About a dozen are known in copper, several gilt, three of them in museums. NGC's census also lists gilt examples of this Judd number. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-6. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1771, Adams-Woodin 1552 and Taxay EP1119. Cataloged as PCGS #61942.
