1878 Proof Half Eagle Pattern - J-1572
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The 1878 Proof Half Eagle Pattern - J-1572 is a proof half eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. This is one of George T. Morgan's 1878 half eagles struck on thinner, wider planchets than the regular coin, 25.5 mm against 21.5 mm, possibly as a guard against counterfeiting. It pairs Morgan's second obverse with the reverse that has pellets around FIVE DOLLARS; the single known gold example was in the Farouk sale and has not been seen since. It is struck in gold with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1761 and Taxay EP1115. Cataloged as PCGS #61935.
