Description
The 1878 Proof Half Eagle Pattern - J-1569 is a proof half eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. This is one of George T. Morgan's 1878 half eagles struck on thinner, wider planchets than the regular coin, 25.5 mm against 21.5 mm, possibly as a guard against counterfeiting. It pairs Morgan's first obverse with a reverse that has the motto IN GOD WE TRUST over the eagle; about a dozen are known, several gilt, two in the Smithsonian. NGC's census also lists gilt examples of this Judd number. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1760, Adams-Woodin 1557 and Taxay EP1114. Cataloged as PCGS #61932.
