Description
The 1878 Proof Half Eagle Pattern - J-1571 is a proof half eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. This is one of George T. Morgan's 1878 half eagles struck on thinner, wider planchets than the regular coin, 25.5 mm against 21.5 mm, possibly as a guard against counterfeiting. It pairs Morgan's second obverse, with pellets in E PLURIBUS UNUM, with the IN GOD WE TRUST reverse; about half a dozen are known in copper, one described as silver-plated. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1765, Adams-Woodin 1554 and Taxay EP1113. Cataloged as PCGS #61934.
