Description
The 1878 Proof Half Eagle Pattern - J-1577 is a proof half eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. This is George T. Morgan's Liberty head at regular size, made as both a half eagle and an eagle, the eagle copying his 1877 design (J-1545) with a new date. A Mint record of January 12, 1878 found by Roger Burdette records that two half eagles and two eagles of Morgan's design were struck in gold for the Director's office. Two are known in gold. It is struck in gold with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1770, Adams-Woodin 1551 and Taxay EP1118. Cataloged as PCGS #61941.
