Description
The 1878 Proof Half Eagle Pattern - J-1574 is a proof half eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. William Barber's flowing hair half eagle was struck on a wider planchet than the regular half eagle, possibly as a guard against counterfeiting. About a dozen and a half are known in copper, several gilt, and at least six are in museum collections. NGC's census also lists gilt examples of this Judd number. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-6. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1766, Adams-Woodin 1553 and Taxay EP1117. Cataloged as PCGS #61937.
