=1878-P VAM-17 Doubled Reverse= Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, December 1965. 17 II/I 5 - A1f (Doubled Reverse) (179) Obverse II/I 5– Slightly doubled LIBERTY shifted left. All stars on right and left doubled. Die chips in lower loop of first 8; first 8 doubled slightly at top outside and right outside of upper loop and top inside of lower loop. 7 doubled at top right and left side of upper serif. Reverse A1f - Doubled lower and left wreath, all of legend, and stars. Three small feathers added on eagle's right and two on eagle's left side between leg and bottom of wing. Eagle's right leg and right wing doubled on outside. Olive branch leaves are doubled on outside. DPIS – In 1878 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: Comments: # The 1878 VAM-17 is an 8 Tailfeather Morgan w/ the A1f reverse. The VAM 17 is the most common 8 tail feather variety. Although 1878-P VAM-12, 1878-P VAM-16 & 1878-P VAM-17 share the same A1f reverse, each uses an obverse unique to itself. # To identify VAM-17, the die chip in the bottom loop of the first 8 is straightforward. There is also a long die scratch in front of the eye, which is not always visible in internet images. The best attribution is to note the large engraved feather next to the eagle's left leg (right side to the viewer) and the chip in the 8.
