1878-P VAM-14.17 Doubled Date and Hair Discovered by Michael Fey, July 1998. 14-17 I1 16 · A1c (Doubled Date and Hair) (189) Obverse I1 16– Doubled bottom edge of lower hair strands. Left side of first four right stars and first three left stars slightly doubled. Doubled date with 1 doubled below upper cross bar, first 8 doubled at top inside and lower left outside of upper loop. Upper right of 7 doubled. Top inside of both loops and lower left outside of upper loop of second 8 is doubled. Die makers- die chip at top right inside of Liberty's ear. Dot of metal in front of Liberty's eye. Reverse A1C - Letters in UNITED doubled strongly on top and bottom. STATES OF AMERICA letters doubled at bottom. ONE DOLLAR letters doubled at top. Left wreath strongly doubled. Three small feathers added on eagle's right and two on eagle's left side between leg and bottom of wing. DPIS – In 1878 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. Emission Sequence Obverse: Reverse: Comments: The VAM-14.17 is an extreme ultra rarity with perhaps 5 or 6 known. It is among the most difficult of all the ultra-rare 8 tail feather coins to locate. This is an 8 Tailfeather Morgan variety. The A1c reverse is shared by VAMs 3, 4, 5, 14.6, 14.7, 14.11, 14.12, 14.14, 14.17 and 14.18. All but VAMs 3 & 4 are major rarities.
