Description
1878-P VAM-20 Doubled Date, Clashed Obverse n Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, December 1965. Revision January 2005 by Mark Kimpton This coin is a Hot 50 Morgan VAM 20(revised) II/I 2 · A2/A1c (Doubled Date, Clashed Obverse n) (189) Obverse II/I 2– Clashed die as with VAM 18A with faint incuse n of In from reverse showing next to Liberty's neck. Reverse A2/A1c– Doubled left lower wreath, olive branch leaves, arrow tips and bottom of eagle's wings. ON of ONE, lower parts of LLAR in DOLLAR, and U, N, and T of UNITED stongly doubled with most of other lettes faintly doubled. Thin small feather added on eagle's right side between leg and bottom of wing. Top arrow head and shaft doubled. Same description as in VAM book. DPIS – In 1878 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: Comments: # Attribution note, please read: The VAM-20 shares the same obverse with the [[1878-P VAM-18 and [[1878-P VAM-19, which are common 8tf varieties. The reverse for the VAM-20 is similar to the reverse for the VAM-19, especially to an untrained eye, or a biased eye that badly wants their Morgan to be a VAM-20, which brings much higher premiums. You can even find slabs from reputable companies that incorrectly label a VAM-19 specimens as a VAM-20. The moral of the story..if you buy a so-called "VAM-20" make very certain that you're getting a VAM-20 and not a VAM-19, or VAM-18 for that matter. Check the reverse thoroughly!
