1878-P VAM-14.7 Dot Next to Ear Discovered by Martin Field, October 1979. This coin is a Hit List 40 Morgan Vam. Slightly doubled date with 1 doubled below upper bar, both 8's doubled at top inside of both loops, and 7 doubled below crossbar and on right side of vertical shaft. Die flake next to ear at top right outside.Radial die crack on right side of 1. '''Reverse A1C''' - Letters in UNITED doubled strongly on top and bottom. STATES OF AMERICA letters doubled at bottom. ONE DOLLAR letters doubled at top. Left wreath strongly doubled. Three small feathers added on eagle's right and two on eagle's left side between leg and bottom of wing. The A1c reverse is shared by VAM's [[1878-P VAM-3, [[1878-P VAM-4, [[1878-P VAM-5, [[1878-P VAM-14.6, [[1878-P VAM-14.7, [[1878-P VAM-14.11, [[1878-P VAM-14.12, [[1878-P VAM-14.14, [[1878-P VAM-14.17 and [[1878-P VAM-14.18. All but VAMs 3 & 4 are major rarities. # Ultra-rare with only 7 confirmed examples (the recently released 8TF Population report lists about a dozen, but would double-count coins crossed to PGCS from other services). Oddly, all reported specimens except one are mint state. Since the early 8TF dies were notorious for quickly cracking, it is easy to surmise that the 14.7 obverse die was taken out of production and all coins struck were removed to study the cracking and thus never released into circulation. To solve the problem, design changes were eventually made to lower the relief and widen the rims, and subsequently extended the die life.
