Description
The 1877 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-1540 is a proof half dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. This is Anthony C. Paquet's only 1877 half dollar design. Roger Burdette found a Mint record of March 20, 1877 recording that Paquet had handed the Coiner a pair of half dollar dies to be turned down to fit the presses, so the design was ready early in the year. Two obverse dies were used: one that cracked through the stars and date (five known) and an uncracked one with the date further left (Pollock-1711A, a single example). It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1711, Adams-Woodin 1529 and Taxay EP1049. Cataloged as PCGS #61882.
