Description
The 1877 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-1503 is a proof half dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. The obverse is George T. Morgan's Liberty head, long thought to be modeled on Anna Williams. Morgan cut four obverse dies and six reverses for the 1877 half dollar patterns. Its reverse shows an eagle on a shield. It was struck from two obverse dies: the first Morgan head of this type, without the initial M on the neck (Pollock-1664, one known), and the second, with the M, which became the obverse of the 1878 dollar (Pollock-1656, four known). It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com lists the Pollock-1664 die pair as unique and rates the Pollock-1656 die pair R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1664 and Pollock-1656, Adams-Woodin 1506 and Taxay EP1078. Cataloged as PCGS #61838.
