Description

The 1877 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-1506 is a proof half dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. The obverse is George T. Morgan's Liberty head, long thought to be modeled on Anna Williams. Morgan cut four obverse dies and six reverses for the 1877 half dollar patterns. Its reverse shows a seven-sided shield, which Morgan had sketched for Director Henry Linderman by February 1877. Two are known from the first obverse die (Pollock-1668) and four from the second (Pollock-1660). It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1668 and Pollock-1660, Adams-Woodin 1507 and Taxay EP1074. Cataloged as PCGS #61841.
