Description
The 1877 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-1539a is a proof half dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. The obverse is William Barber's capped Liberty, perhaps made to compete with Morgan's design; a die scratch runs from the rim to Liberty just left of the I of IN. It was first described in an Elder sale of 1908 and first separated from J-1539 by Wayte Raymond in 1932; three are known. It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1707, Adams-Woodin 1537 and Taxay EP1053. Cataloged as PCGS #61881.
