Description
The 1877 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-1538 is a proof half dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. The obverse is William Barber's capped Liberty, perhaps made to compete with Morgan's design; a die scratch runs from the rim to Liberty just left of the I of IN. It is known in copper; one example was first sold in an Elder sale and another belonged to Col. Green. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1706 and Taxay EP1057. Cataloged as PCGS #61879.
